Nutmeg Ice Cream

It is no surprise that I have a tremendous sweet tooth. Most sweets in my house don't last more than a few hours, even if the portions are big enough to last days. With all the fresh ingredients here, it is again no surprise that there are many delicious desserts. One of my favorite sweet shoppes is a local ice cream hut at "options" just outside of campus. Sugar and Spice is run by two wonderful ladies and they serve up some solid ice cream (There is also a gelato truck on campus that heavenly). While my absolute favorite flavor is coffee and cookie, I've switched up my routine to try a more local flavor nutmeg! Its delicious and while some may be overpowered by the flavor I think it has a nice subtle, smooth texture. So in honor of one of the biggest spices here on the island, I give you Nutmeg Ice Cream!!

1 1/2 cups milk
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
3 large eggs
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
1/8 tsp salt
1/4 tsp vanilla
In saucepan bring milk and cream just to a low boil.  In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, nutmeg, salt and vanilla.  Whisk 1/2 cup milk mixture into the egg mixture and whisk the mixture into the remaining milk mixture.
This will now become a custard.  Cook custard over medium heat, stirring constantly with wooden spatula (until it is 175F by using a candy thermometer).
Transfer custard to metal bowl and then place metal bowl in a larger bowl of ice and cold water (stir until cold).
Place and freeze the custard in a ice cream freezer and let set.
